BSR Data Resources Highlights: Health and Retirement Study (HRS)

HRS is a multidisciplinary longitudinal study that surveys a representative sample of approximately 20,000 people in America aged 50 and older, supported by NIA and the Social Security Administration. The HRS provides survey data linked to program data from sources including Social Security and Medicare as well as objective health measures including blood-based biomarkers that researchers can use to address important questions about the challenges and opportunities of aging and Alzheimer’s Disease. An international collection of HRS studies from around the world facilitate cross-national research to address important research questions on aging and dementia examining different social, cultural, environmental, economic and behavioral contexts.

Here are some of the recent updated data products from HRS website:

Visit the HRS website to learn about the study, listen to informational tutorials, review documentation and codebooks, learn how to access data, and see where you can connect with HRS staff at 2025 conferences. If you want hands-on learning on how to use HRS and spend devoted time in data labs using the data with the experts, register for the 2025 Summer Workshop: Introduction to the HRS that is taking place from June 2-6, 2025, virtually.
