Foundations of Social Network Analysis in R Using Netify

An ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods Topical Workshop

Summarize, visualize, and model network data using R and the Netify package.

Goals:

  • Introduce the core concepts of network analysis, emphasizing practical applications for social science research.
  • Guide participants through summarizing, visualizing, and modeling network data using R and the netify package.
  • Equip attendees with a foundation to incorporate network analysis methods confidently into their own projects.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Key terminology and foundational concepts of network analysis, including how and why to frame social data as networks.
  • How to clean, visualize, and summarize network data using R, with special attention to basic descriptive measures like centrality and community structure.
  • The basics of network modeling approaches and when to consider more advanced methods.
  • How to streamline workflows and interpret results using netify, preparing them for future research or advanced studies in network analysis.
